The combined parishes of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury (which was carved out of the former) formed the St Giles District of the Metropolis from 1855 to 1900. Work began in 1873 to build a large infirmary to the north of the workhouse, at the junction with Brunswick Road (later renamed St Giles Road). The development consists of two buildings of up to 15 storeys in height, arranged around a public courtyard lined with shops and restaurants.
