The person I am sending them too, also on Verizon has their inbox cleaned out. Text and multimedia messages are billed the same way, unless you're on a pay-as-you-go messaging plan. Same problem. Verizon. I am now getting a right arrow instead of a check mark and they read sent but not delivered.

I seem to be having more problems with text messages not being delivered. If a message is delivered it will show the check mark.
